Update Regarding Recent Reporting About César Chávez
Dear SUSD Families and Staff,
Today, national news outlets reported serious allegations of sexual abuse involving César Chávez, a prominent labor organizer whose work is closely connected to the history of farmworker advocacy in our region. We recognize this reporting may be upsetting or confusing for some members of our community.
At this time, the Soledad Unified School District is reviewing the information that has been reported and evaluating our next steps regarding any district or school-based activities that may reference or celebrate César Chávez Day. Our priority is to ensure any instructional or commemorative activities align with our values, are age-appropriate, and remain centered on student wellbeing and safety. We will share additional guidance with staff and families as our review continues.
Regardless of any historical figure or current event, our commitment is clear: student safety comes first. If your child needs support, please contact your school’s main office to be connected with a counselor.
If you or someone you know needs confidential help related to sexual violence, the following resources are available 24/7:
National Sexual Assault Hotline (RAINN): 1-800-656-HOPE (4673) or online chat at rainn.org
Monterey County Rape Crisis Center: 831-375-4357, mtryrapecrisis.org
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: Call or text 988 (for emotional distress or crisis support)
We also ask our community to be mindful about sharing information on social media. Rumors and speculation can be harmful, particularly to survivors of abuse and to those who may be struggling. If you have questions about any current or potential district activities, please reach out directly to your school principal or the district office so we can provide accurate information.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep our schools safe, supportive, and respectful for every student.
Sincerely,
Randy Bangs
Superintendent
